Craig Brown Visits Harrison Elementary
Craig Brown takes time off from his writing and illustrating to visit
schools. He mostly visits schools in the midwest but has traveled as far
as Korea. Craig Brown has written and illustrated five books and has
illustrated several by other authors.
He creates his illustrations using stippling. That is a technique which
uses dots to make lighter and darker areas. Once the stippling is done to
create the forms, color is added to the picture. He uses his fingers to
apply pastel color and sprays the picture to keep the color from
smearing.
When he visited Harrison in 1993 he had planned to bring his dogs Max and
Mo but they could not come on the plane. While he was here he drew an
illustration of The Patchwork Farmer and signed it for Harrison
School. When he autographed books he drew pictures in each one. We liked
that he told us about his dogs. We learned about the different technique
he uses to draw his illustrations. He showed us his manuscript and
illustrations for In the Spring. That book was published after he
was at our school. In 1995 another new book was published. The idea for
that book, Tractor, came to him during his school visits in Iowa.
A company has made an author card about him (Authorcards International,
Inc., PO Box 94082-H, Seattle, WA 98124; 1-800-752-4359).
